Funny How Things Work Out

Last month when I was in Utah, my best friend mentioned something that her husband had said to her about me recently. Something along the lines of how, when they first started dating, he figured he had the least in common with me out of all her friends. Now, five years later, apparently I'm the only friend of hers he really talks to or with whom he has anything in common.

It's hilarious to me because, when they first started dating, he didn't talk all that much and I didn't get to know him all that well. But over the years, we found out we had a mutual love of old-school Nintendo. They would come over, he would play, and my best friend and I would scratch each other's backs while catching up ("Oh hey, that joke's still funny," she would say while not moving her hand scratching my back, knowing I love a soft-and-slow back-scratch).

Recently we discovered that we have a similar love for (obsession with?) basketball, and specifically, the Jazz and Lakers. Yes, the Jazz AND Lakers. Fandom of the two does not have to be mutually exclusive. Turns out we both love motion offenses, and those two teams are rare in a league filled with isolation plays and no set systems.

It's funny how things work out. I never would have guessed, when they first started dating, that I would so enjoy getting to know this guy, and that I would come to love him for how much he loves her, how much he adores her and how well he treats her--they could not be a more perfect match. I was super excited when it worked out that he'd be the one picking me up from the SLC airport since he was finishing up with his KSL sports gig late that night anyway--we'd have a whole hour to talk Jazz on the way to their place! It was fantastic.

You like to think when your friends are starting to date someone that they're making a good choice and that they're seeing everything with eyes wide open, that they're picking someone with whom they can have a really great, healthy, fulfilling relationship. Sometimes it turns out that way, and sometimes it doesn't. In this case, I had no idea how much she was rocking the choosing-your-eternal-companion concept, but she nailed it.

Best blog EVER. And not just because I know who it's about. I hope you realize that while all your observations are correct, that does set the bar pretty high for you. Don't think for a second that just because we don't live in the same state I won't take my responsibility seriously for vetting your potential husband.

Did you know that by the end of the week we will have watched like 4 NBA games? And even though the Jazz will be playing without D-Will and probably Booz, I am excited to see Millsap start! I also made a resolution to no longer judge players based on looks (before if they reminded me of someone laughable, I wouldn't take them seriously).

For example:
Kyle Corver = Zac Efron
Pau Gosol = caveman from Geico ads
Kirilenko = bad guy from Rocky IV
Chris Anderson = Lucifer

The hardest part about being a fan of both the Jazz and Lakers (besides the fact that fans of either team share a well-known mutual hatred) is the problem of who to root for when they play each other. I'll be honest, I try to pull for whichever team is playing at home at the time. But if someone on the visiting team decides to have a great game...let's just say it gets flexible.

Of course, the most miraculous thing of all of this is that Wendy managed to get into the game as well. Never thought that would actually happen.

Heather, I'm just not that good at remember my friends' married names if I knew them pre-marriage. Sorry. So HasANewLastName is your last name in my book.

Wendy, best blog ever because it's about you and your husband? =) And honey, if I can ever find a guy I even want to marry, you better believe I'll be flying you in to vet him! And look at you and all your NBA talk! You're totally right on with the Chris Anderson look-alike. And look at Millsap and his studly play tonight! 32/14/7. Dude's a stud. And at half the price of what Boozer wants. Not bad.

And Jake! Welcome to my blog! Nice to have a man around here to balance out all the estrogen.

LOVE it when you wind up with good friend-in-laws. I'm now closer friends with the wife of my best guy friend from college than I am with her! It's great that you've grown to appreciate him more and more over the years. :) Makes SUCH a difference!
