Wild Dog vs. Domestic Dog

Last night I took Kobe to park about 10:30 pm or so. As part of his recovery, he's supposed to go on short walks, and since he's used to two major running/playing sessions per day of 30-45 minutes each, I've been taking him on 6-7 shorter walks a day just to get the energy out (note: everyone told us he'd mellow out around 2 or 3 years old, then they said maybe around 4 or 5, then they said 7 is the definitive mellowing-out age. Now they've stopped telling us he's going to mellow out, being that he's almost 10 and running circles around the pups. He's just an energetic boy, and we've learned to manage it with lots and lots and lots of running and balls everywhere).

So I thought to myself, he's not going to run off-leash if I don't have a ball. His sutures come out Wednesday and, hopefully, he'll be given the green light to run, jump, etc. (and I can BATHE HIM! Woot!) Usually, late at night, he just walks from tree to tree until he's marked all of them.

No such luck last night. I saw him stop what he was doing, perk up, and bolt off. I turned away for a second, terrified because I knew what he was chasing after: a coyote. As he got closer to the coyote, I was relieved because Kobe was a good chunk bigger. But still, my boy is really all mushy and tender inside--I swear! Luckily, the coyote turned around and ran off, but Kobe chased him for quite some time, hair raised and growing. Thank heavens he finally gave up and came back. I was freaked out, just hoping I wouldn't have to bury my sweet boy and then enroll in intensive therapy for the next year. Because I really can't have Kobe going anytime soon. He's too much fun. Even with all the puppy energy.

As a fellow puppy lover, the coyote encounter had me a little tense. No to burying Kobe. No. No. No.
